The Right Order: A Complete Guide to Layering Your Skincare Routine

Most routines fail not because the products are wrong, but because the order is. Apply a heavy oil before a water-based serum and the serum simply can't penetrate. Layer sunscreen under a moisturizer instead of over it and you lose most of its protection. The rule is simple once you know it: thinnest to thickest, water-based before oil-based.

Cleanse, always first

Whether you double cleanse at night (an oil cleanser to dissolve makeup and SPF, followed by a water-based cleanser) or single cleanse in the morning, this step exists to give every following product a clean surface to work with. Skipping it or rushing it undermines everything layered on top.

Treat, then hydrate

Active treatments - vitamin C serum, retinol, exfoliating acids - go directly onto clean, dry skin, where concentration matters most. Follow with a hyaluronic acid serum or humectant-rich essence while skin is still slightly damp, which helps lock in water rather than let it evaporate.

Seal with moisturizer

Moisturizer's job is to seal in everything underneath it and reinforce the skin barrier, so it always goes near the end, after serums and before facial oils (if you use one - oils are heavier and go last among skincare, sealing the whole stack).

SPF is the final step, non-negotiable

In the morning, sunscreen always goes last, on top of moisturizer, and needs roughly a fingertip's worth to be effective. Every active ingredient in the routine below it - vitamin C, retinol, acids - increases sun sensitivity, which makes this step the one most worth never skipping.

Give actives time to work before judging them

A layered routine takes four to six weeks of consistent use before most actives show visible results. Introduce one new product at a time, roughly two weeks apart, so if irritation shows up, you know exactly what caused it.
